01-9, SIDE A (Please note: These are House Special Committee on Economic Development, Trade and Tourism tapes) CALL TO ORDER REPRESENTATIVE LESIL McGUIRE, Chair, called the joint meeting of the House Special Committee on Economic Development, Trade and Tourism; the House Special Committee on Oil and Gas; and the House Transportation Standing Committee to order at 10:42 a.m. PRESENT Committee members present were Representatives McGuire, Chenault, Crawford, Dyson, Fate, Green, Guess, James, Kapsner, Kohring, Kookesh, Masek, Morgan, Ogan, Rokeberg, Scalzi, and Wilson. SUMMARY OF INFORMATION BILL WOOLF, speaking on behalf of U.S. Senator Murkowski, offered Senator Murkowski's vision for better communication and transportation of resources, as well as encouragement of a transportation corridor. DR. PAUL METZ, University of Alaska, described possible routes for mining projects and gave a brief history of recent exploration of minerals. JIM KUBITZ, representing the Alaska Railroad Corporation, introduced certain maps that outline possible routes for the utilities corridor. COLIN CHAPMAN, on behalf of Congressman Don Young, informed members that Congressman Don Young was fully supportive of the plan to look into these issues for Alaska's future. TOM BRINGHAM spoke about the Northwest corridor plan. He drew attention to looking at communities' and residents' needs in terms of this issue. Committee members inquired about the following: REPRESENTATIVE GREEN asked questions regarding deposits discussed by Dr. Milt Wiltse of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). He also inquired about the safety issues of having a railroad and pipeline so close to a highway. REPRESENTATIVE SCALZI asked if there would be an increase in activity that would result in more funding for surveys. ANNOUNCEMENTS There were no announcements. COMMITTEE ACTION The committee took no action.
